Recovered Fiber Art, Poetry, and Party in Santa Barbara

Melinda Palacio

At Cabrillo Pavilion Arts Center in Santa Barbara

In October 2015,  I reported on The Case of the Missing Quilts. The artwork was a special collaboration between Santa Barbara Sunday Poets and the Fibervision art collective. In an interesting twist on the ekphrastic form, artists created fiber work in response to poems by local poets. I am honored to have originally art pieces based on three different poems from my book, How Fire Is a Story, Waiting. The ocean view from the Cabrillo Pavilion Arts Center in Santa Barbara is breathtaking. As if the sheer view weren't enough, the space currently exhibits "From Verse to Visual," one of kind artwork base on poetry, the exhibit will be up until May 22, with artist led tours of the show April 23 and May 10 at 10:00 am. But the event you won't want to miss is the free reception and poetry reading Wednesday, April 13 from 5:30 to 7:30, with the poetry reading beginning at 6pm.

I honored to have 5 interpretations of three of my poems.
Wednesday, I will read from the poems that inspired the five fiber arts.

In front of artwork by Linda Estrada, inspired by my crow poem.

After much of the artwork went missing, many of the pieces in from Verse to Visual are not for sale, having become extra dear to the artists who created them.

Two pieces inspired by my poems:
Kristen Otte's: Flight: Red Dies Pretty (top) and Diana Acevedo's 3 x 3 x 3 (bottom)

The spacious venue is filled with art. Next week add wine, goodies, and poets to the show.
I'm looking forward to hearing fellow poets read the work that inspired this show and then revisited the artwork. Poets include Santa Barbara Poet Laureate Sojourner Kincaid Rolle, Alison Bailey, Toni Lorien, Mary Brown, and Marcia Meier. I've also attended this show in the past and have been extremely impressed by this collective. The eats at this reception are also wonderful, many homemade by the artists. This year the poets will also contribute food to the fiesta. Arrive on time, 5:30. Poetry reading, along with artist presentation will begin sharply at 6pm next Wednesday.

Chinaberry Dream by Lora Martin, inspired by my poem, Chinaberry Dreams.
NFS, Not for Sale.
